Digital Integrated Circuits - Analysis and Design

PDF | English | 6MB | 721 pages

No field of enterprise today is more dynamic or challenging than that of
digital integrated circuits. Since the invention of the integrated circuit in
1958, our ability to pack transistors on a single chip of silicon has doubled
roughly every 18 months, as described by “Moore’s law.” As a consequence,
the functionality and performance of digital integrated circuits have
improved geometrically with time. This exponential progress is unprecedented
in any other industry or segment of the world economy, and has
revolutionized the way we live and work.
Because of its very nature, the field of digital integrated circuits has rapidly
outrun the numerous good books available on the topic. In response, some
authors have adopted the approach of narrowing the focus to a single sub-
field, with the goal of covering an ever-increasing wealth of technology.
None, however, has made a clear transition to the modern multidisciplinary
practice of digital integrated circuits.

Difference Equations An Introduction with Applications

PDF | English | 13MB

This book uses elementary analysis and linear algebra to investigate solutions to difference
equations. The reader likely will have encountered difference equations in
one or more of the following contexts: the approximation of solutions of equations
by Newton's Method, the discretization of differential equations, the computation of
special functions, the counting of elements in a defined set (combinatorics), and the
discrete modeling of economic or biological phenomena. In this book, we give examples
of how difference equations arise in each of these areas, as well as examples
of numerous applications to other subjects.
Our goal is to present an overview of the various facets of difference equations
that can be studied by elementary mathematical methods. We hope to convince the
reader that the subject is a rich one, both interesting and useful. The reader will not
find here a text on numerical analysis (plenty of good ones already exist). Although
much of the contents of this book is closely related to the techniques of numerical
analysis, we have, except in a few places, omitted discussion of computation by
computer.

Complete Book of Intelligence Tests

PDF | English | 1MB

Intelligence may be narrowly defined as the capacity to acquire
knowledge and understanding, and use it in different novel situations.
It is this ability, or capacity, which enables the individual to deal with
real situations and profit intellectually from sensory experience.
A test of intelligence is designed to formally study, under test
conditions, the success of an individual in adapting to a specific
situation.
There are a number of different methods which purport to measure
intelligence, the most famous of which is the IQ, or intelligence
quotient test. In the formation of such tests many psychologists treat
intelligence as a general ability operating as a common factor in a wide
variety of aptitudes.
Whilst many IQ tests measure a variety of different types of ability
such as verbal, mathematical, spatial and reasoning skills, there is now
a second school of thought in which it is believed that the earlier
definitions of intelligence may be too simplistic.

Compiling Techniques

PDF | English | 9MB

The name compiler has been given to a computer program which
will accept as data a program in a problem-oriented language, such
as Algol or Fortran, and produce as output a computer-oriented
code which, after possibly some further processing by an assembler
or loader, will be capable of being obeyed by a computer and produce
results equivalent to those defined by the program in the problemoriented
language. This definition is rather vague and has to be as
the word compiler is used for rather a wide range of computer
programs with very different characteristics.

Clinical Emergency Medicine Casebook

PDF | 12MB |english |

Emergency medicine is a tremendously challenging medical specialty. Fortunately,
this field is profoundly rewarding. It gives health care professionals the unique
opportunity to help individuals at their time of greatest need. Sometimes, simply
offering reassurance, kindness or compassion is all that we can do; the importance
of which should never be underestimated.
In emergency medicine, health care professionals assist individuals whose pain,
anxiety and stress levels are high. Often, our quick decisions and actions are lifesaving.
Emergency medicine personnel continuously use their extraordinary skills,
knowledge and experience to “make things happen” and “get the job done,” in an
attempt to positively impact patients and their families, significant others, friends
and persons important to them.
In reality, physicians, nurses, mid-level providers, paramedics, residents and medical
students generally have time to look up information from various sources. Yet
emergency personnel have the responsibility to provide services not available to
individuals at that moment anywhere other than an emergency department. Therefore,
our purpose is even more vital.

Basic Environtmental engineering

PDF | English | 2MB

Environmental engineering is one of the most popular, complex and fast growing disciplines in
engineering. The scope of environment includes issues from public health, aesthetics, and impact
of all development activities, pollution control legislation, standards, regulations, guidelines and
their enforcement. Traditionally the application of engineering principles for the protection and
enhancement of the quality of environment and protection of public health was called as sanitary
engineering or public health engineering. Around 1968 this was changed to environmental
engineering.
For conceiving environmental engineering, one has to consider the definition of engineering
itself. Engineering may be defined as the application, under limits of scientific principles for the
planning, design, execution, operation and maintenance of structures, equipment and systems for
the development and benefit of the society. Here the word benefit is more important than the
development. The so-called development in some cases may not be in real benefit of the society.
The environmental engineer plans, designs, executes, operates and maintains the water,
wastewater and solid waste management plants. Clean, bacteriologically safe, potable drinking
water protects and enhances public health. Liquid and solid waste management is a necessary step
for healthy living. They also deal with air pollution control. The resulting pure cleaner air is conducive
to people’s good health and prevents the building and other materials from the harmful effects of air
pollution. The environmental engineer cares for the energy requirements of the society and the ways
and means to protect the environment against the various pollutions created through the production
and consumption of various goods and comfort conditions. It is the duty of environment engineer to
assess the environmental impacts of the various development and other activities. In general one has
to work to have sustainable and holistic development. Of course there are always constraints of
resources, knowledge, human nature, social and racial considerations that limit the achievement of
these goals.

Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers 2009

PDF | English | 1MB

The topic of this book has a long history. Its fundamentals were laid down
by icons of mathematics like Euler and Lagrange. It was once heralded as
the panacea for all engineering optimization problems by suggesting that all
one needs to do was to apply the Euler-Lagrange equation form and solve the
resulting di erential equation.

How to Think Like a Mathematician - A Companion to Undergraduate Mathematics

PDF | English |1MB | 279 pages

Mathematics is the most powerful tool we have. It controls our world. We can use it to
put men on the moon. We use it to calculate how much insulin a diabetic should take. It
is hard to get right.
And yet. And yet . . . And yet people who use or like mathematics are considered geeks
or nerds.1 And yet mathematics is considered useless by most people – throughout history
children at school have whined ‘When am I ever going to use this?’
Whywould anyone want to become a mathematician? As mentioned earlier mathematics
is a very powerful tool. Jobs that use mathematics are often well-paid and people do tend
to be impressed. There are a number of responses from non-mathematicians when meeting
a mathematician, the most common being ‘I hated maths at school. I wasn’t any good at
it’, but another common response is ‘You must be really clever.’

Forensic Science

PDF | English | 20MB | 1139 pages

This entirely new and comprehensive reference
work, Forensic Science, addresses the rapidly
growing academic and public interest in the
application of the sciences to criminal investigations.
The extent of this interest can be measured
by the expansion of academic courses on
forensics and criminal justice in schools and colleges
and by the proliferation of popular television
programs, both dramatic and documentary,
on crime scene investigations. Articles in
Forensic Science’s three volumes cover many
topics that figure prominently in the media;
however, the set’s basic approach to forensic science
is factual, and it lays great stress on offering
up-to-date material on hard topics in this
rapidly advancing field.

Black Hole Physics Basic Concepts and New Developments

PDF | English | 26MB

The present work covers practically all aspects of black hole physics and its
astrophysical applications. Among the topics treated in depth are: space-time of
stationary black holes, general theory of black holes, black hole perturbations,
black hole numerics, black hole electrodynamics, black holes in unified theories
of gravity, quantum black holes, final states of evaporating black holes and the
information loss puzzle. Special attention is paid to the role of black holes in
astrophysics and observational evidence of black hole existence. Many exotic
subjects linked with black holes, such as white holes, wormholes, and time
machines are discussed in detail. Numerous appendices cover mathematical aspects
of general relativity and black holes and quantum field theory in curved
spacetime. This makes the book practically self-contained. Extensive references
provide the reader with a guide to the literature in this field. Audience: This
book will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate students whose work
involves relativity and gravitation, statistical physics, thermo-dynamics,
active galactic nuclei and stellar physics.

Analysis and Application of Analog Electronic Circuits to Biomedical Instrumentation

PDF | english |4MB | 556 pages

This text is intended for use in a classroom course on analysis and application
of analog electronic circuits in biomedical engineering taken by junior or
senior undergraduate students specializing in biomedical engineering. It will
also serve as a reference book for biophysics and medical students interested
in the topics. Readers are assumed to have had introductory core courses
up to the junior level in engineering mathematics, including complex algebra,
calculus, and introductory differential equations. They also should have
taken an introductory course in electronic circuits and devices. As a result
of taking these courses, readers should be familiar with systems block diagrams
and the concepts of frequency response and transfer functions; they
should be able to solve simple linear ordinary differential equations and
perform basic manipulations in linear algebra. It is also important to have
an understanding of the working principles of the various basic solid-state
devices (diodes, bipolar junction transistors, and field-effect transistors) used
in electronic circuits in biomedical applications.

Applied BioFluid Mechanics

PDF | English | 5MB | 333 pages

Biomedical engineering is a discipline that is multidisciplinary by
definition. The days when medicine was left to the physicians, and
engineering was left to the engineers, seem to have passed us by. I
have searched for an undergraduate/graduate level biomedical fluid
mechanics textbook since I began teaching at Rose-Hulman in 1987. I
looked for, but never found, a book that combined the physiology of the
cardiovascular and pulmonary systems with engineering of fluid
mechanics and hematology to my satisfaction, so I agreed to write a monograph.
Ken McCombs at McGraw-Hill was satisfied well enough with
that work that he asked me to write the textbook version that you see
here. Applied Biofluid Mechanics includes problem sets and a solutions
manual that traditionally accompany engineering textbooks.
Applied Biofluid Mechanics begins in Chapter 1 with a review of some
of the basics of fluid mechanics, which all mechanical or chemical engineers
would learn. It continues with two chapters on cardiovascular and
pulmonary physiology followed by a chapter describing hematology and
blood rheology. These five chapters provide the foundation for the remainder
of the book, which focuses on more advanced engineering concepts.
Dr. Fine has added some particularly nice improvements in Chapters 7
and 10 concerning solutions for, and modeling of, pulsatile flow.
My 10-week, graduate-level, biofluid mechanics course forms the basis
for the book. The course consists of 40 lectures and covers most, but not
all, of the material contained in the book. The course is intended to prepare
students for work in the health care device industry and others for
graduate work in biomedical engineering.
In spite of great effort on the part of many proofreaders, I expect that
mistakes will appear in this book. I welcome suggestions for improvement
from all readers, with intent to improve subsequent printings and editions.

Advanced Probability Theory for Biomedical Engineers

PDF | English | 1MB | 108 Pages

This is the third in a series of short books on probability theory and random processes for
biomedical engineers. This book focuses on standard probability distributions commonly encountered
in biomedical engineering. The exponential, Poisson and Gaussian distributions are
introduced, as well as important approximations to the Bernoulli PMF and Gaussian CDF.
Many important properties of jointly Gaussian random variables are presented. The primary
subjects of the final chapter are methods for determining the probability distribution of a function
of a random variable. We first evaluate the probability distribution of a function of one
random variable using the CDF and then the PDF. Next, the probability distribution for a
single random variable is determined from a function of two random variables using the CDF.
Then, the joint probability distribution is found from a function of two random variables using
the joint PDF and the CDF.
The aim of all three books is as an introduction to probability theory. The audience
includes students, engineers and researchers presenting applications of this theory to a wide
variety of problems—as well as pursuing these topics at a more advanced level. The theory
material is presented in a logical manner—developing special mathematical skills as needed.
The mathematical background required of the reader is basic knowledge of differential calculus.
Pertinent biomedical engineering examples are throughout the text. Drill problems, straightforward
exercises designed to reinforce concepts and develop problem solution skills, follow
most sections.

Introduction to Bioinformatics

PDF | English |6MB | 255pages

My goal is that readers of this book will emerge with
?? An appreciation of the nature of the very large amount of detailed information about ourselves and
other species that has become available.
?? A sense of the range of applications of bioinformatics to molecular biology, clinical medicine,
pharmacology, biotechnology, agriculture, forensic science, anthropology and other disciplines.
?? A useful knowledge of the techniques by which, through the World Wide Web, we gain access to
the data and the methods for their analysis.
?? An appreciation of the role of computers and computer science in the investigations and
applications of the data.
?? Confidence in the reader's basic skills in information retrieval, and calculations with the data, and in
the ability to extend these skills by self-directed 'field work' on the Web.
?? A sense of optimism that the data and methods of bioinformatics will create profound advances in
our understanding of life, and improvements in the health of humans and other living things.
Plan of the book
?? Chapter 1 sets the stage and introduces all of the major players: DNA and protein sequences and
structures, genomes and proteomes, databases and information retrieval, the World Wide Web and
computer programming. Before developing individual topics in detail it is important to see the
framework of their interactions.
?? Chapter 2 presents the nature of individual genomes, including the Human Genome, and the
relationships among them, from the biological point of view.
?? Chapter 3 imparts basic skills in using the Web in bioinformatics. It describes archival databanks,
and leads the reader through sample sessions, involving information retrieval from some of the major
databases in molecular biology.
?? Chapter 4 treats the analysis of relationships among sequences - alignments and phylogenetic
trees. These methods underlie some of the major computational challenges of bioinformatics:
detecting distant relatives, understanding relationships among genomes of different organisms, and
tracing the course of evolution at the species and molecular levels.
?? Chapter 5 moves into three dimensions, treating protein structure and folding. Sequence and
structure must be seen as full partners, with bioinformatics developing methods for moving back and
forth between them as fluently as possible. Understanding protein structures in detail is essential for
determining their mechanisms of action, and for clinical and pharmacological applications.

Dangerous Google

Google serves some 80 percent of all
search queries on the Internet, making
it by far the most popular search
engine. Its popularity is due not only to excellent
search effectiveness, but also extensive
querying capabilities. However, we should
also remember that the Internet is a highly
dynamic medium, so the results presented
by Google are not always up-to-date – some
search results might be stale, while other
relevant resources might not yet have been
visited by Googlebot (the automatic script
that browses and indexes Web resources for
Google).

Understanding the linux kernel

PDF | English | 3MB |542 Pages

All people curious about how Linux works and why it is so efficient will find answers here.
After reading the book, you will find your way through the many thousands of lines of code,
distinguishing between crucial data structures and secondary ones—in short, becoming a true
Linux hacker.
Our work might be considered a guided tour of the Linux kernel: most of the significant data
structures and many algorithms and programming tricks used in the kernel are discussed; in
many cases, the relevant fragments of code are discussed line by line. Of course, you should
have the Linux source code on hand and should be willing to spend some effort deciphering
some of the functions that are not, for sake of brevity, fully described.
On another level, the book will give valuable insights to people who want to know more about
the critical design issues in a modern operating system. It is not specifically addressed to
system administrators or programmers; it is mostly for people who want to understand how
things really work inside the machine! Like any good guide, we try to go beyond superficial
features. We offer background, such as the history of major features and the reasons they were
used.
